 My Favourite Book

 or

 "Books That Have Influenced Me"

I have read a many books of general interest. Of all these I like Bertrand Russell's "common Sense and Nuclear Warfare" most. This book is small in size, but it is collection of deep thoughts. It provides useful information on the different dangers and problems of a great world war. Here we may consider some of Russell's useful ideas.

Russell says our world is facing the danger of a great world war. If a world war takes place, atomic, hydrogen and other bombs and nuclear weapons will be used by the super powers. Almost all the countries will be affected by this war. Most of them may get destroyed. So, they should do something to remove this danger.

Russell rightly says that rulers or governments of powerful countries are making greater and greater preparations for a nuclear war. They are spending huge amounts of money on producing atomic weapons. Countries like Russia and America are increasingly producing destructive weapons. Their scientists and engineers are preparing weapons and bombs which can destroy whole countries and kill millions of lives. There is possibility that satellites sent into space by scientists may be armed with destructive weapons. Even the moon the natural settalite can be used by scientists for purposes of nuclear attacks on other countries.

Russell wants all kinds of wars to end. He thinks a smaller war can turn into a big, nuclear war. To avoid war all nations or countries should become friendly. Nations should stop having doubts and negative thoughs about each other. Countries should stop trying to dominate or have control over others through war.

The most important part of Russell's book is about reducing the size of armed forces. He rightly says that all kinds of nuclear weapons should be prohibited. All the existing stocks of nuclear weapons should be destroyed. If the super powers stop manufacturing nuclear ko weapons, they will be saving a lot of money. They will also not be in a position of fight an atomic war to settle their disputes. There should be a complete agreement among them not to manufacture nuclear weapons. Their scientific centers or arms factories or plants that can make nuclear weapons should be open to inspection.

Russell wants the United Nations Organization to become really powerful. It should be in a position to stop one nation from starting a war against each other. There should be an International Authority having its own strong armed forces. This International Authority should be capable of stopping one country from an attacking other.

Russell has written his book "Common Sense and Nuclear Warfare" in a simple and engaging style. He explains his ideas well. We feel after reading the book that war is truly extremely harmful and destructive. Russell has not discussed defensive wars which may sometimes be proper. However, when all countries agree not to fight, even defensive wars will automatically not take place.

Russell's book is, of course, worth reading. It teaches lesson of peace to all the world. Let rulers and politicians act upon these for the good of their countries and humankind.
