Illegal movement of goods across the geographical borders of a country is called smuggling. It is a very old practice but has tremendously increased in volume after the Second World War. Smuggling is obviously a very despicable game. The people are tempted by very high profits which offer a great attraction to the criminal-minded dare. devils. They smuggle goods in the darkness of nights as well as in broad daylight. These smugglers are very cunning people. They hide goods in their vehicles in such a way that the Customs officials find it very difficult to locate them. Sometimes, the smugglers are caught and punished severely; yet the illegal goes on. The reason that money has such great charm for some people that they do not mind being caught and punished or even shot and killed for it.
Smugglers are greatest and most dangerous enemies of a country. The harms of smuggling are countless. This causes a great loss to the national resources, national wealth and the national economy. The wealth of one country flows to the other. Smuggling of gold decreases the gold reserves in a country. This bad practice of smuggling also creates many evils. The smugglers offer large bribes to the Customs Officers and Police Officers. The prices of things smuggled to other countries, rise up.
There are many causes of smuggling. First of all, the desire to become rich overnight works at the root of this evil. These days a man is respected and judged by his wealth. Therefore, everyone wishes to be richer than the other. Legal business yields money but slowly. Smuggling is risky but it brings money in no time. Secondly, there is a great difference between the price of a thing in one country and its price in the other. Price of gold, silver and drugs vary at different places. Smuggling promises a large amount of profit. The smugglers are often a well organized group. They love huge resources and wealth. They bribe the corrupt officers and successfully manage to escape.
To stop smuggling, the smugglers should be given severe punishments. The Customs staff, the rangers and the police should be honest and alert. The people should not buy the smuggled items. We should cooperate with the government in uprooting this evil from the country.
In short we may say that smuggling is a poison for the economy of any country. It is very right to say that smugglers make money at the cost of their country. Therefore, it is very important to stop this illegal trade.
